Pond Dipping at Rutland Water
On Sunday 8th April, the WRT joined the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust on their Wildlife Watch programme aimed at getting children involved in conservation. 12 kids aged between 5-11 joined us for pond dipping/species identification and water nutrient testing. Highlights for the pond dipping included a smooth newt, several sticklebacks and dragonfly nymphs.
For the water nutrient testing, the children tested for phosphate and nitrate and compared the results between water originating from:
-The River Gwash
-A drinking water tap
-A farm-side puddle
-A freshwater pond
The results stirred up interesting discussions on why certain water samples may have higher or lower levels of nutrients than other.
