Stamford Mill Stream Restoration

Stamford Millstream (the Kings Mill) has been in existence for several hundred years. However, it no longer serves as the energy to power a mill, but features as a picturesque (in parts) element of the Welland as it flows through Stamford.

Unfortunately, due to a number of factors, including a reduced flow of water, the Mill Stream has suffered badly in recent times and is not currently in a very healthy state. This has led to the overgrowth of weeds, stagnation, and a loss of wildlife.

The good news is that something can and is being done to rectify the problems. The Welland Rivers Trust is currently working with the Stamford Rivercare Group (which now incorporates the Mill Stream Group) and Anglian Water to draw up plans for clearing out the weeds, dredging the channel and restoring the pumped flow of water. Some work will start shortly, but the project will take a considerable amount of manpower and money to complete. A huge boost has recently come from Stamford's largest employer, Cummins Generator Technologies, who have offered a team of approx 60 people to work on the project. Cummins offer all employees on their site the opportunity to volunteer for 4 hours (paid) community service under their social responsibility scheme called Every Employee Every Community (EEEC).

If you think you could help in any way, then please get in touch. Any extra pairs of hands will be welcome, as will donations to add to the project fund. A bid is already being prepared for Big Lottery funding and a second bid been submitted for funding from the Grimples Green Grants scheme, run by The Green Insurance Company.
